Digital euro

A digital euro would be a digital form of central bank money, specifically the euro. It could be used by the general public in much the same way as cash, only in virtual form. Alongside cash, the Eurosystem would thus supply households with an additional form of central bank money that can be used quickly, easily and securely.

Next steps

If you want to participate in monetary policy operations for the first time, please proceed as follows:

Step 1

First, please contact your customer service team (KBS). They will provide you with the relevant information on the next steps.

Step 2

In order to collateralise monetary policy operations with marketable assets (securities), you must open an operational safe custody account and a collateral account.

Step 3

You will need to connect to the Bundesbank’s collateral management system via the CAP (Collateralmanagement Access Portal) special procedure using the Bundebank’s ExtraNet. This requires registration with certification.

Step 4

You will also need a TARGET-Bundesbank primary MCA for monetary settlement. Further information and the registration form can be found in "TARGET2/T2S consolidation".

If you want to submit credit claims – i.e. non-marketable assets – as collateral using the online procedure, you will also require access to MACCs via the Bundesbank’s ExtraNet in addition to a collateral account.

You will also need to register with the OpenMarket Tender Operations System (OMTOS).
