The German government has decided to mint an €11 collectors’ coin entitled “UEFA European Football Championship 2024,” scheduled for issue on 8 May 2024. The coin features one of the world’s most popular major sporting events, the European Football Championship, which will be held in the Federal Republic of Germany in 2024, for the first time since Germany’s reunification.

The coin is made of silver (alloy Ag 500). It weighs 14g, has a diameter of 30mm and will be made available both in mint condition and with a proof-like finish. The mint condition coins will be brought into circulation at their face value (€11) by the Deutsche Bundesbank. The collector quality coins with a proof-like finish will be priced higher than their face value and can be ordered from Münze Deutschland.

In terms of the nominal value and the silver alloy, the design features of the coin are unique in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The picture side of the coin was designed by the artist Detlef Behr from Cologne. The reverse was designed by Berlin-based artist Lorenz Crössmann.

The picture side skilfully references the iconic roof architecture of Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, where the final of the tournament will be played. The focal point around which all else revolves is the image of a football, which almost seems to rise off the surface in three dimensions. This is set against a stylised playing field with its four corner flags. The black, red and gold elements are a reference to the national colours of the host country, Germany. The “one” and “zero” featured in the design could symbolise a match result – or the ten venues of the tournament. The design impresses with its exceptionally incisive, contemporary and clear visual language.

The reverse side features an eagle, the inscription “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the year 2024, the twelve stars of Europe, the letter “A” for the State Mint of Berlin and the inscription “SILBER 500”.

The coin’s smooth edge bears the inscription: “VEREINT IM HERZEN EUROPAS” (UNITED IN THE HEART OF EUROPE).

The amount of coins available for purchase has been set at a maximum of five coins per person per day. Power of attorney cannot be recognised when purchasing coins.
