Cashless means of payment such as the girocard or credit card are enjoying increasing popularity in the retail trade. And yet, in three out of four cases, customers decide to pay with cash at the checkout. From the retail trade's point of view, this decision is not insignificant: because regardless of which means of payment the customer chooses, each will incur costs. But how much does a cash payment cost? Does it take longer? And who incurs the costs?
Against this background, the Deutsche Bundesbank, in cooperation with the EHI Retail Institute, the scientific institute of the retail trade, conducted the present study "Costs of Cash Payments". The aim of the study is to determine and compare the costs of cash and card payments in the retail sector. You will learn how the German retail sector is structured, how long payment transactions take at the checkout and which activities have to be taken into account when determining costs.
